Preparation of Isopropyl Chloride

Asked by Anusha Malhotra · 1 year ago

How can isopropyl chloride be prepared in the laboratory?

1 Answer

Isopropyl chloride can be prepared by:

1. Reacting isopropyl alcohol (2-propanol) with thionyl chloride (SOCl2)
2. Treating isopropyl alcohol with phosphorus trichloride (PCl3)
3. Adding HCl to propene (electrophilic addition)

The most common method is the reaction with thionyl chloride, as it produces gaseous by-products that are easily removed.
