How is Plaster of Paris prepared?

1 Answer

Plaster of Paris is prepared by heating gypsum, which has the chemical formula CaSO4·2H2O (calcium sulfate dihydrate), to a temperature of about 373K (100°C). This process removes 1.5 molecules of water, resulting in the formation of calcium sulfate hemihydrate (CaSO4·1/2H2O).

The reaction can be represented as:

CaSO4·2H2O (Gypsum) → CaSO4·1/2H2O (Plaster of Paris) + 1.5H2O
