What is the purpose of Fehling's test in organic chemistry?

1 Answer

Fehling's test is used to detect reducing sugars in a given sample. When a reducing sugar is present:

1. The blue copper(II) ions are reduced to red copper(I) oxide
2. A brick-red precipitate forms, indicating a positive result

This test is particularly useful for identifying aldoses (aldehydes) and some ketoses.
