What are the four quantum numbers and what do they represent?

1 Answer

The four quantum numbers described in Chapter 2 of Class 11 Chemistry are:

1. Principal Quantum Number (n):
- Represents the main energy level or shell
- Takes positive integer values (1, 2, 3, ...)

2. Azimuthal Quantum Number (l):
- Represents the subshell or orbital shape
- Takes values from 0 to (n-1)

3. Magnetic Quantum Number (ml):
- Represents the orientation of the orbital in space
- Takes values from -l to +l, including 0

4. Spin Quantum Number (ms):
- Represents the spin of the electron
- Takes values of +1/2 or -1/2

These quantum numbers completely describe the state of an electron in an atom and are crucial for understanding electron configuration and atomic properties.
