What is the carbylamine test and what is its reaction mechanism?

1 Answer

The carbylamine test is a qualitative test used to distinguish between primary amines and other types of amines. The reaction mechanism is as follows:
1. Primary amine reacts with chloroform (CHCl₃) and alcoholic potassium hydroxide (KOH)
2. This forms an isocyanide (carbylamine) with a characteristic foul smell
3. The reaction: R-NH₂ + CHCl₃ + 3KOH → R-NC + 3KCl + 3H₂O
Only primary amines give a positive result in this test.
