Reactions of Alcohols, Phenols, and Ethers

Asked by Anusha Malhotra · 1 year ago

What are some important reactions of alcohols, phenols, and ethers in Class 12 chemistry?

1 Answer

Important reactions in Class 12 chemistry:
  • Alcohols: Oxidation, dehydration, reaction with sodium, esterification
  • Phenols: Electrophilic substitution reactions (nitration, halogenation), Kolbe's reaction, Reimer-Tiemann reaction
  • Ethers: Claisen rearrangement, reaction with HI
Common reactions for all: Reaction with PClâ‚…, acidic cleavage. Remember, phenols are more reactive towards electrophilic substitution reactions compared to benzene due to the activating effect of the -OH group.
