How does the reactivity of tert-butyl bromide compare to other alkyl bromides in nucleophilic substitution reactions?

1 Answer

Tert-butyl bromide shows different reactivity compared to primary and secondary alkyl bromides:

  • It undergoes SN1 (unimolecular nucleophilic substitution) reactions more readily than SN2 reactions.
  • The tertiary carbocation intermediate formed is relatively stable due to hyperconjugation.
  • It reacts faster in elimination reactions (E1) compared to primary and secondary alkyl bromides.
  • Tert-butyl bromide is less reactive in SN2 reactions due to steric hindrance around the reaction center.
