Respiratory Quotient

Asked by Vikram Veda · 1 year ago

What is the respiratory quotient, and how does it vary for different substrates?

1 Answer

Respiratory quotient (RQ) is the ratio of CO2 produced to O2 consumed during respiration.

RQ values for different substrates:
1. Carbohydrates: RQ = 1
2. Proteins: RQ ≈ 0.9
3. Fats: RQ ≈ 0.7
4. Organic acids: RQ > 1

RQ helps determine which substrate is being used for respiration. A mixed diet typically results in an RQ between 0.8 and 0.9.
