What role does phloem play in the transportation of food within a plant?
The phloem plays a crucial role in the transportation of food in plants. It is responsible for the translocation of nutrients, particularly the sugars produced during photosynthesis in the leaves, to other parts of the plant. Phloem consists of living cells, including sieve tube elements and companion cells. The sieve tube elements form a network of tubes through which the food (in the form of sucrose) is transported. Companion cells assist in the loading and unloading of sucrose into the sieve tubes. This organized system ensures that every part of the plant receives the necessary nutrients for growth and development.
