How do we determine the number of significant figures in a measurement?

To determine the number of significant figures in a measurement:
- All non-zero digits are significant
- Zeros between non-zero digits are significant
- Leading zeros are not significant
- Trailing zeros in a number with a decimal point are significant
- Trailing zeros in a whole number are not significant unless indicated by a bar or dot
