How do we determine the number of significant figures in a measurement?

To determine the number of significant figures in a measurement:
  • All non-zero digits are significant
  • Zeros between non-zero digits are significant
  • Leading zeros are not significant
  • Trailing zeros in a number with a decimal point are significant
  • Trailing zeros in a whole number are not significant unless indicated by a bar or dot
