Simple Harmonic Motion

What is Simple Harmonic Motion and how is it related to oscillations?

1 Answer

Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM) is a type of periodic motion where the restoring force is directly proportional to the displacement from the equilibrium position. It's closely related to oscillations as it describes the back-and-forth movement of an object around a central point. Examples include the motion of a pendulum or a mass attached to a spring. The key characteristics of SHM are:
  • The motion is periodic
  • The acceleration is proportional to the displacement
  • The acceleration is always directed towards the equilibrium position
