Strength of Oxoacids

Asked by Mohan Dr · 1 year ago

How does the number of oxygen atoms affect the strength of oxoacids?

1 Answer

The strength of oxoacids generally increases with the number of oxygen atoms bonded to the central atom. This is because more oxygen atoms increase the stability of the conjugate base, making the acid stronger. For example, in the chlorine oxoacids series: HClO < HClO2 < HClO3 < HClO4, the acid strength increases as the number of oxygen atoms increases.
