Synaptic Transmission

Asked by Rukhsar Ahmedullah · 1 year ago

How does synaptic transmission occur between neurons as explained in the NCERT neural control and coordination chapter?

1 Answer

Synaptic transmission, as described in NCERT, occurs in the following steps:

1. An action potential reaches the axon terminal
2. Calcium ions enter the axon terminal
3. Synaptic vesicles fuse with the presynaptic membrane
4. Neurotransmitters are released into the synaptic cleft
5. Neurotransmitters bind to receptors on the postsynaptic membrane
6. The postsynaptic neuron is either excited or inhibited

This process allows for the transmission of signals between neurons.
