Trends in the Periodic Table

How does ionization enthalpy vary across a period and down a group in the periodic table?

1 Answer

Ionization enthalpy generally increases across a period from left to right due to increasing nuclear charge, which holds the electrons more tightly. It decreases down a group as the atomic size increases, making it easier to remove an electron due to the greater distance from the nucleus.
