What are the possible orders a reaction can have?

1 Answer

A reaction can have various orders:
  • Zero-order: Rate is independent of reactant concentration
  • First-order: Rate is proportional to the concentration of one reactant
  • Second-order: Rate is proportional to the square of a reactant's concentration or the product of two reactants' concentrations
  • Fractional order: Rate has a non-integer dependence on concentration
  • Negative order: Rate decreases as concentration increases (rare)
