Understanding Anemophily

What is anemophily and how does it occur in plants?

1 Answer

Anemophily is a type of pollination in which pollen grains are transferred from one flower to another through the wind. This process is common in plants that produce a large amount of light, dry, and smooth pollen grains. These grains can be easily carried by the wind over long distances. Examples of anemophilous plants include grasses, maize, and many trees like pines and oaks.

In anemophilous plants, flowers are usually small, inconspicuous, and not brightly colored because they do not need to attract pollinators like insects or birds. They often have long and feathery stigmas to catch the airborne pollen efficiently.
