Understanding Diplontic Life Cycle

Asked by Pranav Malhotra · 1 year ago

What is a diplontic life cycle and which organisms exhibit it?

1 Answer

A diplontic life cycle, also known as diploid life cycle, is characterized by:

1. The dominant, free-living stage is diploid (2n)
2. Meiosis occurs just before gamete formation
3. Gametes are the only haploid (n) cells
4. Zygote is formed by fusion of gametes and develops directly into a diploid organism

Organisms exhibiting diplontic life cycle include most animals and some algae like Fucus (brown algae).
