Gauss's Law is a fundamental principle in electrostatics that relates the electric flux passing through a closed surface to the charge enclosed by that surface. Mathematically, it is stated as:
∮ E · dA = Q_enclosed / ε₀
Here, ∮ E · dA represents the electric flux through a closed surface, Q_enclosed is the total charge enclosed within the surface, and ε₀ is the permittivity of free space.
Gauss's Law is particularly useful for calculating the electric field in situations with high symmetry (e.g., spherical, cylindrical, and planar symmetry). For example, it can be used to determine the electric field due to a point charge, a line of charge, or a uniformly charged plane.
