Understanding Homologous Organs

Asked by Farhanullah Khan · 2 years ago

What are homologous organs? Can you explain with examples?

1 Answer

Homologous organs are structures that have a similar embryonic origin but may have different functions in different organisms. This similarity in structure despite functional differences suggests that the organisms share a common ancestor. For example, the forelimbs of humans, the wings of birds, and the flippers of whales are homologous organs. Although they serve different purposes (manipulation, flying, and swimming, respectively), their similar bone structures indicate a common evolutionary origin.
