Understanding Hybridization in Chemistry Class 11

Asked by Mohammed Irfanullah · 2 years ago

Can someone explain the concept of hybridization and its types as per the NCERT Class 11 Chemistry syllabus?

1 Answer

Hybridization is a concept used to explain the bonding in molecules. It involves the mixing of atomic orbitals to form new hybrid orbitals, which can form sigma bonds or accommodate lone pairs of electrons.

Types of Hybridization:

  • sp Hybridization: Mixing of one s and one p orbital. Example: BeCl2
  • sp2 Hybridization: Mixing of one s and two p orbitals. Example: BF3
  • sp3 Hybridization: Mixing of one s and three p orbitals. Example: CH4
  • sp3d Hybridization: Mixing of one s, three p, and one d orbital. Example: PCl5
  • sp3d2 Hybridization: Mixing of one s, three p, and two d orbitals. Example: SF6

Hybridization helps in explaining the shape and geometry of molecules.
