Understanding Newton's First Law of Motion

Asked by Anu Pathak · 2 years ago

Can someone explain Newton's First Law of Motion in simple terms? How is it relevant to our daily lives?

1 Answer

Newton's First Law of Motion, also known as the Law of Inertia, states that an object will remain at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless acted upon by an external force. In simpler terms, this means that if something is not moving, it will not start moving until a force is applied to it. Similarly, if something is moving, it will not stop or change direction until a force causes it to do so.

Relevance in Daily Life:

  • A book lying on a table will remain there until someone picks it up (an external force).
  • A car will continue to move in a straight line at a constant speed unless the driver applies the brakes or turns the steering wheel (external forces).
