Understanding Oxidising Agents

Asked by Siva Perumalla · 2 years ago

Can someone explain what an oxidising agent is in simple terms? I am struggling to understand this concept from my NCERT textbook.

An oxidising agent, also known as an oxidant, is a substance that has the ability to oxidize other substances. In simple terms, it means that the oxidising agent gains electrons and, in the process, causes another substance to lose electrons. For example, in the reaction between hydrogen and oxygen to form water, oxygen acts as the oxidising agent because it gains electrons from hydrogen.
