Understanding Redox Reactions

Asked by Sanjana Raman · 2 years ago

What is a redox reaction? Can you explain it with an example?

1 Answer

A redox reaction, short for reduction-oxidation reaction, involves the transfer of electrons between two chemical species. One species undergoes oxidation (loses electrons) and the other undergoes reduction (gains electrons).

Example: Consider the reaction between hydrogen and oxygen to form water:

2H2 + O2 → 2H2O

In this reaction, hydrogen (H2) is oxidized because it loses electrons, and oxygen (O2) is reduced because it gains electrons. This can be broken down into two half-reactions:

Oxidation half-reaction: 2H2 → 4H+ + 4e-

Reduction half-reaction: O2 + 4e- → 2O2-

Combining these half-reactions gives us the balanced redox reaction.
