  • Alkyl halides (R-X): In these molecules, the carbon attached to the halogen is electron-deficient due to the electronegativity of the halogen.

Nucleophiles are chemical species that are electron-rich and seek positively charged or electron-deficient centers. They are negatively charged or neutral molecules with lone pairs of electrons that can be donated. In simple terms, they are 'nucleus-loving'. Examples from the NCERT Class 12 Chemistry syllabus include:

  • Hydroxide ion (OH-): This is a negatively charged ion with lone pairs of electrons.
  • Ammonia (NH3): This is a neutral molecule with a lone pair of electrons on the nitrogen atom.
