Can someone please explain the Nernst equation and its significance in electrochemistry?

The Nernst equation is used to calculate the cell potential of an electrochemical cell under non-standard conditions. It is given by:

E = E° - (RT/nF) * lnQ

Where:

  • E is the cell potential under non-standard conditions
  • E° is the standard cell potential
  • R is the universal gas constant (8.314 J/mol·K)
  • T is the temperature in Kelvin
  • n is the number of moles of electrons transferred
  • F is the Faraday constant (96500 C/mol)
  • Q is the reaction quotient

The Nernst equation helps us understand how the cell potential changes with concentration, pressure, and temperature. It is significant because it allows us to calculate the cell potential in real-life conditions, not just under standard conditions (1 M concentration, 1 atm pressure, and 298 K temperature).
