Understanding the Position of f-Block Elements

Asked by Kiranjeet Kaurani · 2 years ago

Can someone explain where the f-block elements are located in the periodic table and why they are placed separately?

1 Answer

The f-block elements are located at the bottom of the periodic table and are commonly referred to as the lanthanides and actinides. These elements are placed separately to maintain the structure and readability of the periodic table. If they were included in the main body of the table, it would become too wide and cumbersome.

The lanthanides include elements with atomic numbers 57 through 71, while the actinides include elements with atomic numbers 89 through 103. The f-block elements are characterized by the filling of their 4f and 5f orbitals, respectively.
