What are coordination compounds?

Asked by Razia Khatoon · 2 years ago

Can someone explain what coordination compounds are in simple terms? I want to understand the basics for my NEET preparation.

1 Answer

Coordination compounds, also known as complex compounds, consist of a central metal atom or ion surrounded by molecules or anions called ligands. These ligands are bonded to the central atom through coordinate bonds. For example, in the compound [Cu(NH3)4]SO4, the central metal ion is Cu2+ and the ligands are NH3 molecules.

Key Points:
  • Central Metal Atom/Ion: The main atom/ion to which ligands are attached.
  • Ligands: Molecules or ions that donate a pair of electrons to the central atom/ion.
  • Coordinate Bond: A type of chemical bond where a ligand donates both electrons to the bond.
Understanding these basics will help you grasp more complex concepts in coordination chemistry.
