What are coordination compounds?

Asked by Rukhsar Fatima · 2 years ago

Can you explain what coordination compounds are and give an example?

1 Answer

Coordination compounds are complex structures formed when a central metal atom or ion is surrounded by non-metal atoms or groups of atoms, called ligands, through coordinate bonds. These compounds are also known as complex compounds. For example, [Fe(CN)6]4- is a coordination compound where the central metal ion is Fe2+ and the ligands are six cyanide ions (CN-).
