What are coordination compounds?

Coordination compounds are complex structures formed when a central metal atom or ion is surrounded by non-metal atoms or groups of atoms, called ligands, through coordinate bonds. These compounds are also known as complex compounds. For example, [Fe(CN)₆]^4- is a coordination compound where the central metal ion is Fe²⁺ and the ligands are six cyanide ions (CN^-).
