What are enzymes and how do they function as biomolecules?

I am a Class 12 student preparing for NEET. Can someone explain what enzymes are and their role as biomolecules?

1 Answer

Enzymes are biological catalysts that speed up chemical reactions in cells without being consumed in the process. They are typically proteins and have the following roles:

  • Catalysis: Enzymes lower the activation energy required for a reaction, thereby accelerating the reaction rate.
  • Specificity: Each enzyme is specific to a particular substrate, meaning it only catalyzes a specific reaction.
  • Regulation: Enzymes can be regulated by factors such as temperature, pH, and the presence of inhibitors or activators.
  • Metabolic Pathways: Enzymes are crucial for metabolic pathways, ensuring that biochemical reactions occur in an orderly and efficient manner.

For example, the enzyme amylase helps in the breakdown of starch into sugars, which is an essential step in digestion.
