Can someone explain what pneumatophores are and their function in plants?

1 Answer

Pneumatophores are specialized aerial roots that grow upward from the soil or water surface. They are commonly found in mangrove species, which grow in waterlogged, swampy areas where oxygen is limited. The primary function of pneumatophores is to facilitate gas exchange by absorbing oxygen from the air. These roots have numerous pores called lenticels that allow air to enter, providing the plant with the necessary oxygen for respiration.
