Can someone explain the general characteristics of f-block elements covered in the NCERT syllabus?

1 Answer

The f-block elements, also known as inner transition elements, include the lanthanides and actinides. Here are their general characteristics as per the NCERT syllabus:

  • Electronic Configuration: These elements have electrons filling into the 4f and 5f orbitals.
  • Oxidation States: They exhibit multiple oxidation states, but +3 is the most common.
  • Magnetic Properties: Many of these elements are paramagnetic due to unpaired electrons in the f orbitals.
  • Coloration: Ions of f-block elements are often colored, which is due to f-f electronic transitions.
  • Chemical Reactivity: The lanthanides are reactive metals, especially with water, while the actinides are highly reactive and often radioactive.

These elements also have high melting and boiling points and are typically hard metals.
