Can you explain the roles of the main hormones involved in the menstrual cycle as per the Class 12 NCERT syllabus?

1 Answer

The menstrual cycle is regulated by several hormones. The main hormones involved are:

  • Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH): Secreted by the anterior pituitary gland, FSH stimulates the growth and development of ovarian follicles.
  • Luteinizing Hormone (LH): Also secreted by the anterior pituitary gland, LH triggers ovulation and the formation of the corpus luteum.
  • Estrogen: Produced by the growing ovarian follicles, estrogen helps in the repair and growth of the endometrial lining of the uterus.
  • Progesterone: Secreted by the corpus luteum, progesterone maintains the endometrial lining for potential implantation of the embryo.

These hormones work in a coordinated manner to regulate the menstrual cycle.
