Can someone explain the main stages of the cell cycle in detail?

1 Answer

The cell cycle consists of two main phases:

  1. Interphase: This is the phase where the cell prepares for division and is divided into three stages:
    • G1 Phase (Gap 1): The cell grows and synthesizes proteins necessary for cell division.
    • S Phase (Synthesis): DNA replication occurs, resulting in two identical sets of chromosomes.
    • G2 Phase (Gap 2): The cell continues to grow and makes final preparations for division, including the synthesis of microtubules.
  2. M Phase (Mitotic Phase): This phase includes both mitosis and cytokinesis:
    • Mitosis: Division of the nucleus and its contents, which is further divided into prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase.
    • Cytokinesis: Division of the cytoplasm, resulting in two daughter cells.
