Can someone explain the stages of spermatogenesis as per the Class 12 NCERT syllabus?

1 Answer

Spermatogenesis is the process of formation of spermatozoa (sperm cells) in males. It occurs in the seminiferous tubules of the testes and can be divided into three main stages:

  1. Multiplicative Phase: In this phase, the spermatogonia (stem cells) undergo mitotic divisions to produce more spermatogonia.
  2. Growth Phase: Some of these spermatogonia grow and enlarge to form primary spermatocytes.
  3. Maturation Phase: The primary spermatocytes undergo the first meiotic division to form two secondary spermatocytes. Each secondary spermatocyte then undergoes the second meiotic division to produce two spermatids. Thus, each primary spermatocyte gives rise to four spermatids. These spermatids undergo a process called spermiogenesis to become mature spermatozoa (sperms).
