What is Gabriel Phthalimide Synthesis?

Can someone explain what Gabriel Phthalimide Synthesis is? I need a simple explanation suitable for NEET preparation.

Gabriel Phthalimide Synthesis is a chemical reaction used to prepare primary amines from alkyl halides. This method is named after the German chemist Siegmund Gabriel. It involves the following steps:

  1. Phthalimide is first treated with a strong base like potassium hydroxide (KOH) to form the potassium salt of phthalimide.
  2. This potassium salt reacts with an alkyl halide (R-X) to form N-alkyl phthalimide.
  3. Finally, the N-alkyl phthalimide is hydrolyzed with a base like sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to produce the primary amine (R-NH2) and phthalic acid.

This synthesis is particularly useful because it avoids the formation of secondary and tertiary amines and ensures the formation of a pure primary amine.
