Can someone explain what spore formation is in fungi and how it occurs?

1 Answer

Spore formation is a method of asexual reproduction commonly found in fungi. In this process, the parent organism produces spores, which are tiny, usually single-celled, reproductive units capable of developing into a new individual without the need for fertilization.

In fungi, spore formation typically occurs in specialized structures called sporangia. Within the sporangia, spores are produced through mitosis. Once mature, the sporangium bursts open, releasing the spores into the environment. These spores then germinate under favorable conditions to form new fungal organisms.
