Meiosis I reduces the chromosome number. Meiosis II, being similar to mitosis, separates sister chromatids. Since the cells entering Meiosis II are already haploid (with duplicated chromosomes), separating the sister chromatids results in truly haploid cells with unduplicated chromosomes.
