At high altitudes, the oxygen levels are lower. To compensate for the reduced oxygen availability, the body increases the number of red blood cells (RBCs) to enhance the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood. This process is called erythropoiesis and is stimulated by the hormone erythropoietin.
